For my project I plan to change the habits of children and their electronic use. The average child uses about 75 hours of media every week. I few ideas I have for this project is to talk to the boys and girls club, talk to a group of parents, connect with Apple, or starting a movement like a video, website, or even an app. My audience for this project will be families in my community and hopefully vast majority of people who are also trying to the same change. I feel like many families and future generations will care about what I am doing because as a child I was always outside playing, climbing trees, being active, and making human connection. Many children today are constantly staring at a screen and I want to see a change in that.
Student-centered learning is a type of learning where everyone knows the project and what we are trying to accomplish. We usually start and finish with the same outcomes. Audience-centered learning is an idea that you create and that you're passionate about and share it with an audience.
Things I have accomplished so far is the basic idea of what my project may be. I talked to Stephen which helped me understand how I should approach this problem. We wrote out a line of steps which may lead to children's electronic use:
1. Parents who supply the electronics
2. Why? To leave the parents alone?
3. To have an adult conversation
4. To connect about every day things
Strange how the parents supply something to their kids to disconnect them in order for the parents to connect...
For my next step of action I plan to talk to some peers and gather ideas, then I will research more people who are also trying this project idea out. I hope to find someone with the same passion and connect with them to make a massive chain reaction.

BLOG POST 3/4/16
This week I have learned many things. I learned that electronics are controlling us more than we think. Research shows that children are more prone to have psychological problems with constant exposure to electronics such as televisions and computers. Of course they have some positive effects on us, connection, reaching someone when in an emergency, GPS, computers rather than paper. Electronics may keep us connected with a faster pace but we may run the risk of being disconnected from our surroundings. More exposure to electronics disturbs sleep patterns among kids, making them more "wired and tired." This electronics fatigue may last into adulthood. Electronics are vastly changing and spreading across the nation.
I have taken many notes and I have been learning about my topic, digging deeper and finding out what I can do to help. I have looked into many organizations that are helping kids get more active. I have been teaching myself and others about different ways to distract yourself instead of turning towards your phone. I have contacted the Boys and Girls Club and I hope to get a response back approving that I can talk to the kids about healthy electronic use.
Throughout this experiment I have had some challenges. One big challenge for me was turning down the idea of an app. I found a website that helped me calculate the estimated amount of how much money it would take to create an app, which is roughly $30,000. I have decided to make a website and showcase my project on there.
For my next step of action I am going to create a broad statement explaining my project and I plan to walk around the school and take pictures of students using their cell phones, showcasing the fact that electronics are everywhere and how much they can control our lives.

So far this week has been crazy. I found many different facts and possible ways to ‘break up with your phone’. I’ve learned that it's much harder to make a movement than just saying “Hey let's not be on our phones as often.” There is a lot of work that goes into these types of ideas. I’m enjoying the process and hating it at the same time. I have no clue what to expect for the future but it will definitely be a lesson, good or bad.
This week was less facts and more of action steps. Finding a mentor and emailing the Boys and Girls Club. It was an easy process and I got a quick response, which I am stoked about. Today I got an email from the program director of the boys and girls club and she has agreed to be my mentor for this project and help me get dates figured out! I'll be letting her know what my ideas and plans are, and if I'm hitting a wall I'll go to her for help. She was very pleased to be my mentor and help me throughtout this project.
So far nothing has gone wrong, so far it's just a waiting game and putting my mind to what I need to get done and how I want everything to turn out. Due dates are very frustrating at the moment, I need to have an audience at the end of this project, but the program director of the Boys and Girls Club wants me to present in May, the project is over in April. A couple challenges I have faced would be, a website and what I'm going to present on it, making a proper survey, and having an interactive piece within my presentation. But I trust everything will fall into place.
My next step of action will be researching and creating a presentation/ interactive game for my audience of the digital era.

I've learned a lot about the human era, electronics, and our addiction to speed. I've been reading different books about artificial intelligence, how our brains are wired to connect, and our unhealthy use of technology. One thing I have learned about is something called “speed”, the act of going faster. We are always trying to find something that makes us work faster, be better, having the next best thing, etc. We are addicted to speed. Electronics are a huge source of our speed; weekly updates, GPS, communication, microwaves, apps, cars, planes, etc. Speed is a modern invention. Life was not always fast. Once something speeds up another thing speeds up. Horses used to be used as transportation, then cars came along, making a horse drastically slower. Speed is creating a new world that transforms what we do, and who we are. Our brains are one of the most interesting things that roam this earth. They are complex and simple at the same time. They can bend through obstacles, they are bossy, and calm. They can be manipulated (drugs, alcohol), our minds all have one important thing in common… We all crave social connection. Humans feel pain when a loved one dies and hold onto that pain. Why haven't we adapted to move on quickly? We will spend our entire lives motivated by social connection, and we will create anything to make that social connection faster.
My mentor and I are figuring out dates for my presentation. I have pages of notes and I am still taking down more. So far everything is going where I want to. One challenge I have is creating my presentation. I need to take one step at a time and trust that it will all come together and be awesome.
I hope to have a survey sent out by the end of this week. I will be making a journal of some kind and have all of my notes saved there. I also want to talk to my mentor and have my dates by the end of this week. So far this week has been mind blowing and I'm learning a lot about myself and others that I will soon share with the world!

One thing that struck me the most during the gallery walk today was the small amount of feedback I got. I was hoping to get more ideas and questions. I brainstormed with a few seniors and they gave me the idea of creating an interactive TedTalk to present to both parents and students. I think this is a great start to my end result.
So far my project has been filled with lots of research. I sent out a survey to the whole school and the information I have received is very interesting. One thing I saw that wasn't very surprising but was bad was that about 60% out of 91 responses (people) stay up on their electronics before going to bed. When you're on your electronics right before bed it raises stress levels in your brain. I am still continuing my research and gathering facts.
One challenge I have faced during this project was where I was headed and where I want to go. I was stressing out and worried that I wouldn't have an end product, after the gallery walk I gained a lot of ideas and things I can bounce off of. We will see where it goes...
My next step of action is continuing my research process but also I want to begin to create a TedTalk presentation and see what happens there. I will start with a paper/fact sheet and then create a slideshow of some sort about our technology use.

Day 24 of our project, 6 days left until the end. This project has taught me so much and I'm exploring many aspects of electronics and how they are drastically changing our world. During this project I had my own electronic fall out. My phone decided to stop working for two weeks. At points I was upset because I was unable to share something with friends or I couldn't contact anyone, and at other points I was happy to experience things I wouldn't notice if I had electronics distracting me. I've realized how little control I have over my electronics and how much control they have over me. It's depressing to feel that way but incredibly enlightening.
Since my last update I've changed my project plan. I've decided to collaborate with two other girls. Maya is doing a project that includes the wellness of our bodies using yoga. Lilah’s project has to do with nature and how our bodies are responsive to being outside. We have decided to bring our projects together and create a documentary, camping trip, and yoga relaxation trip. There will be no electronics and everyone will have a sense of being together in nature.
The only challenge I have right now is time. Making sure that we can film and edit our documentary is crucial. I also need to start on my final talking piece and present my video to the Boys and Girls Club during No Screen Week. After that I will be ready to roll and show this project to the world.

The biggest challenge I had during this project was overcoming my procrastination stage. I was excited in the beginning of this project and then I became lost sometime towards the end and didn't know where to go. I read about our digital age and I read about human connection. All of this I found interesting but I didn't do anything with it. I would get distracted and watch tv or go hang out with friends instead of putting my mind to the project and putting 100% of my effort into it. I wish I could go back and moonshot think about how big this can be. There are endless things I can do to make my project bigger and better. I am proud of myself for what I started up but I still want to carry on this project and make it into beautiful work.
I think schools across America should most definitely have 20% projects. Projects like these show just how much a student is capable of. It boosts your confidence but it also lets you learn from your mistakes. I enjoyed this project and thought I gained a lot from it. I learned what I can do in the future and maybe what I don't want to do in the future, it gave me a chance to explore what I was interested in and share it with others.
The year is 2026, I am riding on my hoverboard with my artificial intelligent robot friend, I have a flashback to 2016, the year I did my 20% project about electronics and how they are changing the face of our nation. I look at the face of something with no emotion behind its eyes, I wonder…did my presentation change how I perceive our world of technology? Is it to late to slow down time and actually connect with the people I love.
This project has taught me so much. I've learned from my mistakes and I've learned what life can possibly look like. We are moving at an incredibly fast rate with technology. I will always remember what outlook this project gave me and how much of impact I have on our world. One 16 year old CAN make a huge difference, and I'm going to do just that.
